Andre Pluess and Ben Sussman (composers) first began working as collaborators while students at the University of Chicago in 1993. Based in Chicago, their instrumental and choral compositions have been featured in theatre productions in all major Chicago theatres and across the U.S. They are resident composers and designers for Victory Gardens Theatre (2002 Tony Award Recipient Outstanding Regional Theatre), Court Theatre (99-02 resident artists), and Artistic Associates at Lookingglass Theatre and About Face Theatre. Pluess and Sussman have received 6 Joseph Jefferson Awards and Citations, an L.A. Ovation Award and Drama Critics Circle Award and a Lortel Nomination for composition and sound design. Their designs for METAMORPHOSES and I AM MY OWN WIFE enjoyed successful runs off and on Broadway. Other highlights include composition and design for productions of LIFE'S A DREAM, PHAEDRA, and MARY STUART with Joanne Akalaitis, ELEVEN ROOMS OF PROUST, TROJAN WOMEN, and THE SECRET IN THE WINGS with Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman and RACE directed by David Schwimmer. Some current and upcoming projects include OUR LADY OF 121st STREET for Steppenwolf Theatre, CYRANO for the Court/Redmoon Theatres, PERICLES for the Washington DC. Shakespeare Festival, and THE DAY EMILY MARRIED, a new play by Horton Foot directed by Michael Wilson for Primary Stages in N.Y., as well as regional tours of THE SECRET IN THE WINGS at Berkeley Rep., Seattle Rep., and the McCarter Theatre. With long-time collaborator Eric Rosen, Pluess and Sussman have written three music theatre works or song cycles: WORDS ON FIRE, produced by Steppenwolf Theatre and featuring the writings of various Chicago poets, WHITMAN, based on Whitman poetry and assorted texts, and UNDONE, based on the work of performance poet Cin Salach, both produced by About Face Theatre. Currently Rosen, Pluess and Sussman are preparing WINESBURG OHIO, a new musical based on the Sherwood Anderson novel for a production this summer with Steppenwolf/About Face Theatres.
